My Story
Tatjana Jackson is a 4th generation Detroiter. Her grandfather, Nathaniel Holloway II was among the first black dentists to own a dental practice in Ypsilanti, Mi. He was also an investor in the Detroit Civil Rights movement and one of the founders of First Independence Bank, one of the largest African-American owned banks in the United States. Tatjana’s father, Von Jackson is an inventor and served the City of Detroit as a firefighter for over 20 years. Her brother is currently a City of Detroit firefighter today. She is the great granddaughter of Rhoda Hennessey who was among the first women to own a business in Detroit, Law Den Nursing Home on Webb st. Law Den is a cherished memory where Tatjana spent most of her childhood visiting and spending time with elders.
Tatjana continues to carry on this legacy. Today, she is an educator at the Charles H. Wright Museum where she teaches students from all over the state about African American history. She is a professional vocalist and uses her talent to spread touching and positive messages through song. She is President of her neighborhood association, and she is running for Detroit City Council District 5, a community that she is deeply committed to and where she was born and raised.
Tatjana’s decision to run for City Council stems from a love for community. Her dedication to community service began in 2019 when she volunteered to participate in The Arden Park-East Boston Historic District Association. Soon after, she was nominated as President. During her leadership, she implemented successful ideas, funds and membership were increased and she formed several community partnerships.
She also brought solutions to several issues that have risen in the neighborhood. Some issues in particular concerned new development sites that were being constructed in the area. To balance out some of the tension it caused between the residents and developers, she organized community engagement meetings across 20+ blocks and served as a successful mediator for both parties. As a result, the communities cultural heritage was preserved for residents and positive community relations were formed for developers.
As a future city council member, Tatjana plans to continue to implement new and successful ideas to uplift and maintain a positive Detroit community. She has a strong focus on education, health, wealth-building, beautification and restoration of neighborhoods, and the strengthening of families. She understands how to merge the wonderful new growth of the City of Detroit seamlessly with the preservation of the communities that we call home and with the rich culture and history that makes Detroit among the most impactful cities in the world.
Tatjana graduated from Western High School and attended Central Michigan University and Henry Ford Community College, studying subjects close to her heart including Political Science and International Relations, as she worked to earn an Associate Degree in International Law.
