Building Health, Building Wealth
Vote Tatjana Jackson for Detroit City Council District 5
My Story
Tatjana Jackson is a 4th generation Detroiter. Her grandfather, Nathaniel Holloway II was among the first black dentists to own a dental practice in Ypsilanti, MI. He was also an investor in the Detroit Civil Rights movement and one of the founders of First Independence Bank, one of the largest African-American owned banks in the United States. Tatjana’s father is an inventor and served the City of Detroit as a firefighter for over 20 years. Her brother is currently a City of Detroit firefighter today.

My Solutions

BUILDING HEALTH
PROBLEM:
According to the CDC, an estimated six out of ten adults in the United States live with a chronic disease such as cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. It is time to create ways to put our health first. A city cannot be revived when quality of life is not prioritized. How can we perform well within our households or the workplace if we just don’t feel well?
The food that we eat is either one of the main contributors to our illness or one of the main contributors to our healing.
In Detroit, compared to other cities such as L.A.,we have a national deficit in healthy food options. We are one of the few major cities in the country whose residents have to drive miles away to get affordable higher quality food. Not to mention, there’s a third of Detroiters who don’t drive at all.
SOLUTION:
No longer should Detroiters accept poor-quality food. Other cities in the country have been able to offer their residents easy access to healthy food successfully and I wholeheartedly believe Detroit can as well on a groundbreaking international scale.
I’m making it a priority to support local grocery stores, health businesses, urban farms, health related entrepreneurs and delicious health-conscious restaurants and fast-food chains.
Furthermore, mental health and physical fitness is just as important. I’m advocating to increase gyms in District 5 and prioritize gyms that offer additional well-being services such as mindful activities, saunas, steam rooms and fitness programs at an affordable price.

BUILDING WEALTH
PROBLEM:
Nearly 33% of residents in Detroit live in poverty. This is nearly three times higher than the national average.
SOLUTION:
My wealth-building solutions include immediate opportunities for the residents in District 5 to acquire additional income while helping to build our community. Additionally, I have unique and effective strategies to build lasting wealth for homeowners within District 5.
I'm also minimizing the inaccurate information that exists about Detroit and promoting to major business prospects that we must consider the truth of Detroit; Detroit is in a new era. To those who believe that Detroit is not a place to do business, the truth is, it is actually a gold mine and an untapped market with a lot of talent.
Finally, I am working with quality business
owners who understand the value of building wealthy communities and bringing more job opportunities into the district.

EDUCATION
PROBLEM:
There is a large number of adults and children in the city who struggle with reading, writing, and math skills. Different studies indicate that the illiteracy rate in Detroit ranges from 47% to 55%.
Only 5% of Detroit's 8th graders read at a proficient level, and only 39.6% of third graders tested proficient in reading statewide.
In the Detroit Public Schools Community District, only 16% of students tested proficient in English language arts on the 2024 Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). This is UNACCEPTABLE.
SOLUTION:
Detroit’s educational system is in need of repair. Immediate funding is required to improve the literacy rate and the education of Detroit citizens overall. That's what I'm advocating for however, I'm not waiting on funding. I have innovative strategies that can awaken the reading habits of children and adults right now.

DEVELOPMENT AND RESTORATION
PROBLEM: Community needs and new development projects need to be aligned.
SOLUTION:
Each district within Detroit is unique and carries unique opportunities. I am sitting with developers and business owners to bring creative solutions to continue to build the beautiful architecture that Detroit has and meet both the needs of builders and residents.
Restoration of our historical areas and the development of our city is critical for Detroit to meet key city indicators that will give Detroit the competitive advantage that it previously held on the global spectrum.
District 5 can contribute to the development of Detroit and help to attract new business to the city. This will repair and increase the vibrancy and innovation that Detroit has and has been known for over the past century.
